Psychological and Behavioral Responses of the Population of Fez Towards French Healthcare Service Initiatives During the Protectorate Period

The imposition of the French Protectorate on Morocco in 1912 necessitated the introduction of initiatives aimed at developing healthcare services within the colonial administration's pursuit of consolidating its influence. This marked a significant shift in the health landscape of cities such as Fez, which has been selected as a case study in this article. The colonial administration's interest was not limited to establishing medical institutions, providing medical personnel, and modern equipment; rather, it elicited diverse interactions and responses from the local population. This research seeks to explore the nature of these psychological and behavioral responses of the residents of Fez towards these French healthcare initiatives. We will analyze their perceptions, attitudes, and reactions towards the new services, and how their health behaviors adapted to this transformation. Furthermore, the study aims to understand the cultural and social factors that shaped these responses.
